Guided tour to Sos Enattos Mine - Lula

Lula, impianti minerari The Sos Enattos Mine, placed near Lula, in the province of Nuoro, has a long history. The mining concession of Sos Enattos to Paganelli society dates back to 1868; it was interested in the exploitation of silver ore and galena ore which, in this area, were worked since ancient times.
After the realization of some industrial mills and of the first mine works which were necessary for the mining, the layer revealed its secrets: it was less rich in argentiferous lead, but it had an incalculable amount of blende, an ore which, in that period, was considered not very commercial.
In 1905 there was the historic passage to the Società Anonime Des Mines De Malfidano, a French-Belgian mining company.
The site was abandoned for several years, and only in the years after the Second World War there were new activities of analysis and research which led the RI.MI.SA., a society financed from Montevecchio society and then from Monteponi-Montevecchio society, to realize important works and a small installation for the ore treatment.

Devi Sapere che

You must know that
This mine is placed in a wonderful landscape. It stands near Monte Albo, declared a site with community interest (SIC) by the European Community. Near here, as a symbol of an important artistic and cultural heritage of this area, we can find the S. Francesco Church.
The gorgeous country church has always been very dear to the miners and their families. The sacred building is dedicated to S. Francesco of Assisi, in Barbagia known with the name of San Francesco of Lula.
According to legend, the eldest church was built in 1600 by some bandits from Nuoro who considered themselves protected by the Saint.
The church, famous in all Sardinia, is also known for the many citations by the Nobel Prize Grazia Deledda in her literary production.
In this country church, every year from the 1st to the 9th of May, a Novena in honour of S. Francesco is celebrated.
On the occasion of the feast, people, belonging to the religious congregation of Nuoro, take part to the rites and walk for 30 km, both to fulfil a vow and to pray. The prior offers “su filindeu”, a soup with mutton stock and cheese, to the believers who stay in the characteristic “cumbiessas”, small stone houses.

Curiosità

Curiosities
The Sos Enattos Mine was the last metalliferous mine to shut down in the area of Nuoro. Although the mining is ceased, the mining professional competence is employed in the activities of renovation and industrial, mining and environmental exploitation.
Around Sos Enattos we can still see the remains of two important mines of galena and silver as those of Guzzurra and Argentaria together with the remains of some mining villages.
At first, galena ore and silver ore were carried by ox-carts as far as S. Lucia beach, near Siniscola, where they were loaded on vessels anchored near there. A 36 km long road was realized to facilitate the transport. In fact there were no other practicable ways.
In 1896, in Lula mines, there was one of the first strikes of the miners against the abuse of power by the mining society.
