Guided tour to the Galleria Anglosarda – Guspini

Imboccatura delle gallerie The “Galleria Anglosarda”, whose name is connected to the “Compagnia Reale Anglosarda”, is a long underground tunnel which exploited the mine vein of the areas of Arbus and Guspini.
East of Montevecchio, the famous “Galleria Anglosarda” has been one of the first to be involved in mining activities which improved the mine incomes.
The exploitation of the mineralizations of the vast vein of Arbus and Guspini, which extends from Montevecchio to the west area of Ingurtosu for about 12 km, goes back to ancient ages. Various finds attest the use of the site in the Roman period and it is possible it was used even in more distant ages, as various particular excavations suggest.

Devi Sapere che

You must know that
In the XIII and XIV centuries there was a very important impulse to the mining activity, during the Pisan and Aragonese domination, but its definitive expansion came, after changing events, when, in 1848, the king Carlo Alberto granted the perpetual concession of the Montevecchio Mine to Giovanni Antonio Sanna from Sassari.
From then on the industrial exploitation of the mine began and went on with great profits until 1960, but in 1991 it began to decline and then it ceased.
In 1871 the engineer Giorgio Asproni boosted the researches, especially at the Anglosarda and S. Antonio levels, which gave great results, so that in 1872 the S. Antonio shaft was realized. In 1874 it reached 63 metres below the level of the starting area, bringing to that depth the exploitations.
The S. Antonio vein was maybe the richest and the most generous of the Arbus seam system, and it was followed, in height, for about 600 metres, from 420 metres above sea level to 180 metres below sea level.
The several stretches of the main vein must be considered equally important; from East to West they were named Piccalinna, Sanna, Telle, Casargiu, in the mining concession of Montevecchio SpA, and Brassey in the concession of Pertusola. With another branch, the Ingurtosu seam, the vein goes as far as the Gennamari layer.

Curiosità

Curiosities
The mining of the tunnel began in 1852 by the Company “La Piemontese – Compagnia Reale Anglosarda”, to which the Montevecchio Society let out on contract the excavation, in order to speed up the exploitations and to improve the incomes.
Its entrance is placed at the beginning of the big layer, in the Sant’Antonio seam, which represents an important branch of the main vein and which was rapidly exploited for the extraordinary discovery of great deposits of galena.
